As a parent, nothing prepares you for the day your child comes home in tears because of how they were treated at school. My son started to withdraw from activities they once loved, dreading each morning because of the constant bullying they faced. It was heartbreaking.
We tried to handle it on our own at first involving teachers, but it was clear that they needed more support as sadly the system is slow and having multiple people trying to help was not helping him.
That’s when we reached out to VOICE who truly made a difference. With the right intervention, my child slowly began to feel safe again, rebuild friendships, and rediscover their sense of self-worth.
This journey has shown me how critical it is for schools, families, and communities to take bullying seriously. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected in their learning environment. I am grateful that my child is healing, but I also know many others are still suffering in silence.
My hope is that sharing our story will encourage more awareness, compassion, and proactive action against bullying.
“As a mother, nothing prepares you for the moment you discover your child has been groomed. My daughter went from being a bright, carefree girl to someone I hardly recognised — withdrawn, fearful, and carrying a burden no child should ever have to bear. Our whole family felt broken and powerless.”
“When we found VOICE, everything began to change. They didn’t just support my daughter; they supported us as a family. Through counselling, safe spaces, and patient guidance, VOICE helped her rebuild her confidence and reminded her that she is not defined by what happened to her.
“I will forever be grateful to VOICE for walking with us through the darkest time in our lives. They gave my daughter back”
When our family first reached out to VOICE, they were in a desperate situation. Years of domestic abuse had left me and my 3 children isolated, frightened, and unsure of where to turn for safety. I worried about the children’s wellbeing but didn’t have the courage to face my husband’s abuse.
Through VOICE, the family received immediate crisis support, including safe housing and legal guidance to secure a protection orders. Our support worker walked me through every step of the way, helping her navigate through court hearings, and supporting the children with trauma-informed care.
Within months me and my children began to rebuild our lives. The children returned to school without fear, and I found stability through job training and community support.
When we first arrived in the UK, one of the biggest challenges as parents was understanding how child safety works here. Every country has its own systems, and we quickly realised how important it was to learn about safeguarding, children’s rights, and the role of schools and communities.
Thanks to the support of VOICE, we were guided through the basics — from knowing how to keep children safe online, to understanding who to turn to if we ever had concerns. They also explained the importance of safeguarding policies in schools and how every adult plays a role in protecting children.
We are deeply grateful to our charity for helping us feel supported and informed. For any families new to the UK, don’t hesitate to reach out — you’re not alone in this journey.
